A City on the Water
Marcelino Alvarez

Marcelino Alvarez, founder and CEO of Photon Marine, weaves together the past, present, and potential of humanity’s — and Portland’s — intimate relationship with rivers.

Marcelino calls on Portlanders to be pioneers again — and bring forth some “big dig energy” to transform Portland’s waterfront into an “electric river…”

…where whisper-quiet electric watercraft provide recreation and transport between a wide range of venues and amenities.

Rivers have always been pivotal in nurturing life and driving innovation, and Portland has a unique history as a center of both shipbuilding and associated workforce development focused on diversity and well-being.

Yet Portland's rivers are now largely overlooked as resources for enjoyment, commerce, and innovation — especially when compared to vibrant waterfronts in cities like Vancouver, Seattle, and San Francisco, as well as many European maritime cities.

Marcelino argues the time has come to reinvigorate Portland's historical connection with its rivers to spearhead a new era of sustainable maritime and societal innovation not just regionally, but globally.

CEO | Photon Marine

Marcelino is the Chief Executive Officer of Photon Marine, a Portland-based startup that is developing high-powered, electric outboard motor systems for commercial marine fleets. Photon exists for the benefit of the world’s most fragile marine ecosystems and for those whose livelihoods and sustenance depend on them. Prior to Photon, Marcelino served as Chief Product Officer at Fresh Consulting, which acquired Uncorked Studios, a product design firm that he co-founded in 2010 and served as CEO. He sits on the Board of the Freshwater Trust and on the Board of Commissioners for Prosper Portland.

Marcelino enjoys chatting about baseball, public policy, urban mobility, and sustainable systems. His dream project that brings all these together involves getting the Miami Marlins to relocate to Portland to reside in an eco-friendly waterfront stadium with a kayak pool in right field. He and his wife Margaret have three children — Caleb, Lucia, and Mateo, as well as a dog named Luke.
